The fire reportedly started inside sections of the Tejuosho Modern Plaza, a multi-storey commercial complex known for its busy textile and retail businesses. Thick black smoke could be seen rising from the building as frightened traders scrambled to rescue their merchandise while the flames spread rapidly through affected shops.

Videos circulating on social media captured the chaotic scene, with traders and sympathizers shouting in frustration as emergency responders battled the inferno. Several eyewitnesses accused the Lagos State Fire Service of arriving late and struggling to gain proper access to the affected sections of the building.

One eyewitness who shared footage online lamented the situation, saying firefighters appeared overwhelmed while traders watched helplessly as their businesses burned.

Although no deaths had been officially confirmed as of the latest reports, some individuals were said to have sustained minor injuries during efforts to evacuate goods and escape the smoke-filled building.

Authorities are yet to determine the exact cause of the fire, but preliminary suspicions suggest it may have been triggered by an electrical fault — a common cause of market fires in Lagos and other densely populated commercial areas in Nigeria.

The latest incident marks yet another fire disaster linked to Tejuosho Market. In recent years, the market has witnessed multiple outbreaks, including incidents in April 2026, 2024, and 2022, leaving traders repeatedly counting heavy financial losses.

Affected business owners are once again calling on the government to improve market infrastructure, enforce stricter fire safety regulations, and strengthen emergency response systems to prevent recurring tragedies.

Officials of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service had not released a full statement on the scale of the destruction at the time of filing this report, while investigations into the incident continue.

Residents and traders around Yaba remain anxious as authorities work to fully contain the aftermath of the blaze.
