U.S. military officials say American forces repelled an attempted swarm attack by Iranian fast boats in the Strait of Hormuz, describing the confrontation as one of the most intense moments yet in the ongoing 2026 standoff.
According to statements attributed to U.S. defense sources, Iran deployed elements of its so-called “mosquito fleet” — a tactic involving numerous small, fast attack boats — in an apparent attempt to test American defenses during ongoing escort operations under Project Freedom.
U.S. forces responded with aerial firepower, including attack helicopters, successfully neutralizing the threat, officials said. The Pentagon has not released full operational details, but early accounts suggest the engagement prevented disruption to commercial shipping lanes.
“We created a defensive umbrella around the whole waterway — essentially an iron dome over Hormuz,” a U.S. official said, referring to layered air and sea defenses protecting vessels transiting the strait.
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has previously confirmed that American forces are actively intercepting missiles, drones, and maritime threats in the region to ensure safe passage for commercial vessels.
Officials also revealed that more than 1,000 commercial ships have remained stranded in the Gulf since the conflict escalated earlier this year, including several U.S.-flagged vessels. In a significant development, at least two American ships were successfully escorted through the waterway during Tuesday’s operation.
The latest incident underscores the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply flows. Any disruption in the corridor has immediate consequences for global energy markets.
There has been no immediate response from Iranian authorities regarding the latest claims. Tehran has previously denied targeting commercial shipping and has accused the United States of escalating tensions through military operations in the region.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump, who has publicly backed the operation, reiterated his support for strong military action, framing the mission as a decisive demonstration of U.S. strength.
As both sides exchange sharply different narratives, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains highly volatile, with global markets, shipping firms, and governments closely monitoring further developments.
