The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has officially declared intention to contest for the office of President in the forthcoming 2027 general elections.
Governor Makinde made the declaration at the Unity Mega Rally jointly organized by Makinde-led faction of Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) and All Peoples’ Movement (APM) to formalize alliance between the two parties.
Shortly after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Peoples’ Movement (APM) at the PDP’s Adagunodo House on Thursday, Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, alongside delegates of both parties, proceeded to the ancient Mapo Hall where a mammoth crowd had gathered to receive the governor at the Unity Mega Rally, during which he officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Delivering his address, the governor called on opposition leaders to unite against what he described as a deliberate effort by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to turn Nigeria to a one-party state. He maintained that Nigeria no longer operates democracy without a political landscape that guarantees a level playing ground for opposition parties without the interference of the ruling party.
He called on Nigerians to rise above being political spectators and bystanders, assuring that with collective participation of eligible voters, Nigeria would record a historic reset come 2027.
Speaking on behalf of PDP earlier on the Oyo State Chairman of the party, Dayo Ogungbenro, who described the rally as the mother of all rallies, expressed optimism that the partnership will produce all round success in the forthcoming election.
On his part, the APM National Chairman, Dr. Yusuf Naman Dantale and National Secretary, Ayodele Oyadeyi, demanded urgent change in status quo.
The political leaders cited insecurity, kidnapping, harassment, and the struggles of ordinary Nigerians to pay school fees and access basic healthcare as the need to rescue Nigeria for the interest of Nigerians.
The Unity Mega Rally attracted an array of political stakeholders and dignitaries, including former Osun State Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola.
