Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has officially endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor in the 2027 governorship election, setting the stage for what could become a defining political transition in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
The endorsement, made during a high-level political engagement in Lagos, signals a strong push for continuity in the state’s current governance structure under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). It positions Hamzat as a leading contender to take over leadership of Lagos after Sanwo-Olu completes his second term in office.
Governor Sanwo-Olu reportedly described Hamzat as a trusted partner and capable administrator who has been instrumental in driving key reforms across infrastructure, technology, and public service delivery in the state.
“Dr. Obafemi Hamzat has been a reliable partner and a tested administrator. He understands the vision for a greater Lagos and has the competence, integrity, and energy to build on the foundation we have laid,” the governor was quoted as saying.
The endorsement has already sparked widespread political discussions, as analysts interpret it as a strategic move to consolidate party unity ahead of the 2027 elections while reducing internal competition within the APC.
Hamzat, a trained engineer and seasoned public administrator, has served as deputy governor since 2019, playing a key role in overseeing infrastructure development, urban planning, science and technology initiatives, and other strategic sectors.
Political observers say the endorsement aligns with growing support within the party hierarchy, including influential stakeholders in the All-Progressives Congress structure in Lagos, many of whom are already rallying behind Hamzat’s potential candidacy.
Supporters of the deputy governor describe him as a “quiet performer” whose governance style emphasizes results over publicity, particularly in ongoing mega-projects spanning transportation, housing, healthcare, education, and energy reforms.
