South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has issued a firm message to foreign nationals amid escalating xenophobic tensions, urging them to respect the country’s laws and traditions while condemning violence targeting migrants.

“We say to those who are here legally, respect us as South Africans, respect our laws, conventions and our traditions, as you would want us to respect the laws and traditions of your own country,” he said.

The president reiterated that while concerns over illegal immigration exist, they must not fuel xenophobia or attacks on fellow Africans. He warned citizens against taking the law into their own hands, emphasizing that South Africa remains committed to unity and coexistence.

The statement comes amid renewed reports of violence in cities such as Cape Town, Durban, East London, and parts of Gauteng Province, where foreign-owned businesses have reportedly been looted and migrants harassed.

Diplomatic concerns have intensified, with Nigeria’s consulate in Johannesburg issuing safety advisories and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and avoid protest areas.

Observers say the crisis reflects deeper socio-economic tensions, including unemployment and migration pressures, while also testing South Africa’s longstanding commitment to African solidarity following the end of apartheid.

Although Ramaphosa’s remarks aim to calm tensions, critics argue that stronger enforcement actions—such as arrests, prosecutions, and protection for law-abiding migrants—are needed to prevent further escalation.

The situation has placed renewed strain on relations between South Africa and Nigeria, with more protests expected in the coming days.

Authorities say they are monitoring developments closely as calls grow for urgent and decisive action to restore calm and protect all residents.
