The Caretaker Committee Chairman of the Edo State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) and former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Mrs. Elizabeth Ativie on Monday egged on the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC to go the whole hog with the on-going nationwide strike and not abandon the masses after compromising with the federal government. Describing the strike as “timely” and “long expected”, Ativie lamented that each time the NLC embarked on warning strike, before you know it, they would call it off, and expressed the hope that the present strike would not be the same as Nigerians were beginning to lose hope in the NLC.

Advising the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led federal government to feel the pulse of the Nigerian people, Ativie hollered that Nigerians are dying of hunger and begging for food.

She said. “The strike is timely; it has been long expected. Each time they gave warning strike, before you know it, they will call it off. That is how it has always been. I hope that this will not be the same. Nigerians are looking up to the Nigerian Labour Congress. I hope they will be able to strike a deal this time and give Nigerians an authentic result”.

According to her, “My expectations are not high considering our past experiences where they will meet with the government, and before you know it, they will call off the strike. But in the past, that was not the situation. The Nigerian Labour Congress had always been the hope of Nigerians; but you know that they are also products of our society. You can’t live in a corrupt place like Nigeria and expect to have an angel as a leader.

“The huger in the land is obvious. An average Nigerian, before, would tell you ‘I am not begging for food, I am not hungry’. Today, an average Nigerian is hungry and begging for food. I am begging the government to please feel the pulse of the Nigerian people; people are dying of hunger. The students’ loan and other policies are good, but they should look at the power sector. If there are power, low-income workers will not use fuel to power their equipments and things will be better”.
