A wave of grief has swept through Benin City following the tragic death of 30-year-old event planner and interior decorator, Esohe Aigbe, who was allegedly hacked to death after volunteering her services at a funeral decoration assignment in the Ogida area of the Edo State capital.

According to family members and information made available by the police, the incident occurred after Aigbe responded to a request from a fellow event planner on Tuesday, May 27, 2026. She reportedly travelled to Ojo Street, also known as Ujo Street, in the Ogida community of Egor Local Government Area to assist with decorating a venue for a burial ceremony.

Sources said Aigbe offered her assistance free of charge, a gesture that reflected her reputation as a hardworking and supportive professional within the event planning industry.

However, after completing the decoration work, she was allegedly attacked by unidentified assailants who inflicted severe machete wounds on her body.

The victim was rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for emergency treatment but was later confirmed dead by medical personnel. Her remains have since been deposited in a mortuary.

Relatives described the deceased as a peaceful, industrious young woman who played a significant role in supporting her family financially.

According to family sources, Esohe was widely known in Benin City for her dedication to event decoration and interior design services, particularly for funeral ceremonies and social events.

The family also disclosed that efforts to reach the colleague she reportedly went to assist have proven difficult since the incident, a development that has generated widespread speculation and concern among members of the public.

They have called on security agencies to ensure that all those connected to the killing are identified and brought to justice.

The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of one female suspect identified as Faith Ogeyahi in connection with the case.

Police authorities disclosed that the suspect has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further questioning.

The command stated that investigations are ongoing and that efforts are being intensified to track down and arrest any additional suspects who may have been involved in the attack.

Authorities also appealed to members of the public with relevant information to assist investigators.
