The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, the incumbent Governor of Anambra State and candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the winner of the 2025 Anambra State Governorship Election held on Saturday, November 8, 2025.

Soludo clinched a landslide victory, securing a second term in office after defeating 15 other candidates in a contest marked by high voter turnout, minimal disruptions, and transparent electronic result transmission.

According to the official results announced at the State Collation Centre in Awka in the early hours of Sunday, Soludo polled 422,664 votes, representing approximately 78% of the total valid votes cast. His closest rival, Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), scored 99,445 votes (18%), while the Young Progressives Party (YPP) garnered 37,753 votes (7%). The Labour Party (LP) candidate, George Moghalu, received 10,576 votes (2%), and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Jude Ezenwafor, trailed with less than 5,000 votes.

The total valid votes stood at about 540,000 out of roughly 2.3 million registered voters.

APGA Sweeps 20 of 21 LGAs

Soludo dominated across nearly all 21 local government areas, winning in 20 LGAs, including major urban centres like Onitsha North and South, where he amassed over 50,000 combined votes, and Awka North and South, his administrative base.

He also pulled an upset in Nnewi South LGA, the home base of his APC rival Ukachukwu, where he polled around 15,000 votes compared to Ukachukwu’s 9,281.

Opposition Struggles Despite Strong Campaigns

While Ukachukwu managed to win his polling unit, his party failed to expand its reach beyond isolated wards. The APC’s limited progress in Anambra North suggests that the party’s Southeast integration push still faces deep-rooted regional barriers.

The Labour Party, despite support from Peter Obi’s political base, struggled statewide. Moghalu even lost his polling unit in Onitsha North to Soludo by 156 votes to 89, reflecting the disconnect between national momentum and local structure.

The PDP, once a major player in the state, had a negligible showing, failing to win any LGA or significant polling unit.

Peaceful, Transparent Polls

Observers from Yiaga Africa and other monitoring groups described the election as “a milestone for transparency and BVAS efficiency.” INEC confirmed that over 98% of results were uploaded to the IReV portal in real-time, ensuring credibility and public trust.

Voting was extended in some areas until 2:30 PM to accommodate delays caused by late deployment, but there were no major incidents of violence.

Significance and Outlook

Soludo’s re-election consolidates APGA’s political dominance in Anambra, a state it has controlled since 2006. Analysts say the victory reflects public approval of Soludo’s infrastructure projects, education reforms, and security initiatives, despite ongoing criticism of his tax policies.

With the opposition APC and LP underperforming, the result underscores APGA’s resilience in the Southeast, setting the tone for political alignments ahead of the 2027 national elections.

INEC is expected to release the full official LGA-by-LGA breakdown in the coming days via its Result Viewing Portal (IReV).
