Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is once again at the center of global attention as fresh evidence emerges that his 2007 presidential campaign was secretly bankrolled by late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

French investigative outlet Mediapart revealed a Libyan intelligence memo dated December 10, 2006, signed by former Libyan spy chief Moussa Koussa, which approved a €50 million payment to Sarkozy’s campaign. The document, authenticated by judicial experts, outlined details of a high-level meeting between Libyan officials and Sarkozy allies, including Brice Hortefeux and businessman Ziad Takieddine, where the transfer was allegedly agreed.

This revelation adds weight to long-running suspicions of illicit Libyan financing. Investigators say the money was funneled through intermediaries and offshore networks, with Takieddine previously admitting to delivering cash-filled suitcases to Sarkozy’s team in Paris.

In March 2025, Sarkozy was convicted in Paris for “criminal association” in connection with the funding scheme, marking an unprecedented downfall for a former French president. While he has consistently denied wrongdoing, the ruling reaffirmed that illegal financing efforts took place, even if not all of the funds were fully traced.

The scandal, often described as one of France’s biggest political corruption cases, continues to reverberate across Europe. Analysts argue it not only tarnishes Sarkozy’s legacy but also highlights how Gaddafi’s regime sought influence in Western democracies through covert financing.

With the case now cemented in French judicial history, the €50 million Gaddafi-Sarkozy connection has become a symbol of how power, politics, and money collide at the highest levels.
