A Lagos-based woman has sparked widespread debate on social media after declaring that men who earn less than ₦400,000 per month should not get married or start a family in Nigeria’s current economic climate.

The woman, whose comments were captured in a viral video, argued that the rising cost of living has made it nearly impossible for low-income earners to adequately cater for a family. According to her, even with a combined monthly income of about ₦550,000 alongside her partner, they still struggle to meet their financial obligations.

She revealed that their annual rent in Lagos stands at ₦1.5 million, a burden she described as overwhelming amid soaring food prices, transportation costs, utility bills, and other household expenses.

“Rent alone is killing us. How do you expect a man earning less than ₦400,000 to handle a family?” she asked in the video.

The remarks quickly went viral, attracting thousands of reactions from Nigerians who expressed differing views on whether financial readiness should be a major requirement before marriage.

Many users agreed with her position, arguing that the harsh economic realities facing Nigerians make financial stability a necessity before starting a family. Others, however, accused her of promoting unrealistic standards in a country where many workers earn significantly less than her proposed threshold.

Reacting to the video, an X user identified as @lollypeezle criticized what he described as increasing demands in modern relationships.

“Today, they don’t want their MIL alive. Tomorrow, they can’t call MIL, Mummy. Next tomorrow, doing chore is slavery. Later, 400k salary earner should not toast them. I really pity you single guys out there,” the user wrote.

Another user, @AsakyGRN, posted a contrasting video of a woman who claimed she was willing to marry a man earning ₦50,000 monthly and take responsibility for most of the family’s expenses. The post also generated significant engagement online.

A user identified as @chi_quiero questioned the practicality of the woman’s statement, arguing that even a household income of ₦500,000 may not be sufficient in today’s economy.

“This is a very silly thing to say. In today’s Nigeria, what can ₦500,000 do for her and her family? What is wrong with using the visibility that she has just gotten to try and find him a better job?” the user commented.

Meanwhile, @SirDavidBent mocked the conversation, saying, “I can’t date a man that earns 400k monthly. He’s below my standard.”

The controversy has once again brought attention to the growing economic challenges facing Nigerians. Rising inflation, increasing housing costs, fuel prices, and the weakening purchasing power of incomes have continued to put pressure on households across the country.

For many young Nigerians, financial uncertainty remains one of the major reasons for delaying marriage and family planning. While some relationship experts believe that economic stability should be considered before marriage, others maintain that commitment, partnership, and shared goals are equally important factors.

As discussions continue across social media platforms, the viral video has reignited a national conversation about the intersection of love, marriage, and economic survival in modern-day Nigeria.

Whether viewed as financial wisdom or unrealistic expectations, the woman’s comments have struck a chord with many Nigerians navigating the realities of life in one of Africa’s most challenging economic environments.
