An American Army helicopter crashed during a night training exercise at Eglin Air Force Base in the Florida Panhandle, United States.
The area where the crash happened on Tuesday night was under a fog advisory. The area was still extremely foggy as at Wednesday morning, and this was affecting the search, Eglin public affairs specialist, Sara Vidoni, said.
Base officials said the Marines involved in the crash are part of a Camp Lejeune-based special operations group and the soldiers were from a Hammond, Louisiana-based National Guard unit.
The helicopter was reported missing around 8:30 p.m on Tuesday and search and rescue crews found debris from the crash around 2 a.m on Wednesday, Eglin spokesman, Andy Bourland said.
“At this time all are missing,” Bourland said. The ill-fated helicopter took off from Destin’s airport and joined another aircraft in the exercise. The other helicopter that took part in the mission returned safely with all its personnel accounted for.
