Team Brazil emerged victorious at the E1 Lagos Grand Prix, making history as the winners of Africa’s first-ever all-electric powerboat race held on the Lagos Lagoon on October 5, 2025. The thrilling event saw Team Brazil overtake Team Monaco to claim the top spot, showcasing speed, skill, and sustainable innovation on the water.
The high-energy competition featured nine international teams racing hydrogen-powered RaceBird boats capable of reaching speeds up to 50 knots. The Lagos GP, sponsored by FirstBank, brought together global dignitaries, including football legend Didier Drogba, and drew massive local crowds who cheered on from the shoreline.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who attended the event, praised the success of the weekend, describing it as “a proud moment for Lagos and a milestone for Africa’s clean energy and blue economy journey.”
“Beyond the competition, the E1 Lagos GP represented our city’s commitment to innovation, clean energy, and sustainable development,” Governor Sanwo-Olu said. “It was inspiring to see Lagos take its place on the global stage as a city that embraces progress and possibility.”
The weekend festivities began with a vibrant boat regatta, celebrating Lagos’ rich maritime heritage, followed by qualifying trials and an intense race that kept spectators on edge.

Governor Sanwo-Olu applauded the teamwork, speed, and skill displayed by all competitors and the warmth of Lagosians who turned out in large numbers to support the international event.
“Lagos truly shone as we hosted the world with pride and excitement,” he added. “I’m proud of everyone who helped make this event a success and confident in the bright future we are building for Lagos.”
