Martin Abeshi, comptroller-general of the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, has called on former ministers, governors and members of the national and state assemblies to return diplomatic passports in their possession or face the embarrassment of seeing their names published in the media. Abeshi made the call in Abuja on Wednesday while outlining his programme for the agency. President Muhammadu Buhari had on September 7, 2015, directed the NIS to retrieve the official document from all those illegally holding on to it, mostly former top public office holders. They include past commissioners, special advisers or assistants, chairmen and deputy chairmen of local government areas and retired heads of parastatals. According to the NIS Comptroller-General, over 200 passports have been retrieved since the directive was issued but many people are still holding on to the passports. Abeshi advised the erring ex-officials to return the passports immediately. They could do so through comptrollers of state commands all over the country who have been mandated to collect the documents from the illegal holders, said Abeshi.
