The Lagos State Government has refuted viral claims that officials of the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources demanded money from property owners to halt the ongoing demolition of structures obstructing drainage setbacks at Oral Estate, Ikota.
In a statement released today, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources described the circulating video as “false, malicious, and a deliberate attempt to blackmail the government.”
He emphasized that neither he nor any ministry official has ever requested or received any form of payment — whether ₦1 billion, ₦700 million, or even a single kobo — from any property owner affected by the clearance operation.
“The operation to clear the Right of Way and setbacks of illegal obstructions is a public safety imperative, and it has not been paused for negotiation or payment. Our work continues,” the Commissioner stated.
