The Nigerian military has recorded another significant victory in the fight against terrorism following the surrender of two high-profile commanders of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) to troops of Operation HADIN KAI.

The terrorists, identified as Ismail Mohammed and Abu Umar, surrendered to military forces on June 8, 2026, amid sustained offensives and intensified counter-terrorism operations across the North-East.

Military authorities confirmed that the two men are currently in custody and undergoing profiling, interrogation, and debriefing procedures as security agencies seek to gather critical intelligence on the activities, structure, and operational capabilities of the terrorist group.

According to preliminary assessments, both individuals occupied strategic positions within the ISWAP hierarchy and operated within the Mangari axis of the Lake Chad region, one of the group’s long-standing strongholds.

Security sources disclosed that Ismail Mohammed was a close associate of notorious ISWAP leader Baa Shuwa and possessed extensive knowledge of the group’s command structure, recruitment networks, and operational activities.

The second surrendered commander, Abu Umar, was reportedly regarded as one of the terrorist group’s leading explosives experts. Investigators believe he played a key role in the fabrication, maintenance, and deployment of vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs) and other combat-support equipment used in attacks against military formations and civilian targets.

Military officials described the surrender as a major intelligence breakthrough that could provide valuable insights into the inner workings of the terrorist organization and assist ongoing efforts to dismantle its remaining networks.

Further revelations emerging from the interrogation of the surrendered commanders indicate that Mohammed Khalifa, a prominent member of the ISWAP Shurah Council, was recently neutralized during joint military operations conducted under Operation HADIN KAI.

The reported elimination of a senior member of the terrorist group’s decision-making council, coupled with the surrender of two key commanders, is being viewed as another indication of the growing pressure being exerted on insurgent elements operating within the Lake Chad Basin.

Operation HADIN KAI has in recent months intensified coordinated air and ground offensives targeting terrorist enclaves, logistics bases, and leadership structures across the North-East, leading to increased surrenders, arrests, and the recovery of weapons and equipment.

Military authorities maintain that the ongoing operations are aimed at completely degrading terrorist capabilities, restoring peace to affected communities, and creating conditions for the safe return of displaced persons.

The latest development is expected to further boost intelligence-driven operations as security forces continue efforts to eliminate the remnants of terrorist networks and consolidate gains achieved in the region.
