BREAKING: Driver Killed, Many Feared Dead as IED Explosion Hits Passenger Vehicle in Kwara — Fresh Terror Strikes Kaiama Weeks After Massacre
Fresh fears grip Kwara’s Kaiama axis as roadside bomb kills driver, injures passengers, and underscores rising insecurity along the critical New Bussa route just weeks after a deadly mass attack
Panic and renewed fear have gripped communities in Kwara State after a deadly improvised explosive device (IED) blast struck a commercial passenger vehicle near Woro Village in Kaiama Local Government Area on Monday morning.
The explosion, which occurred at about 7:43 a.m. on March 23, 2026, reportedly killed the driver instantly and left several passengers feared dead, marking another tragic security incident in Nigeria’s North-Central region.
Eyewitness accounts and local sources identified the deceased driver as Mallam Zunairu, also reported as Malam Zubairu. The vehicle was said to be en route from Wurumakoto Village in Kaiama LGA to New Bussa in neighbouring Niger State when it ran over the IED planted along the road.
A female passenger, believed to be a nursing mother, sustained critical injuries in the blast and was rushed to hospital, while her six-month-old baby survived without harm — a development many residents have described as miraculous.
Authorities say the exact number of casualties remains unclear as rescue operations and investigations continue. However, fears are mounting that the death toll could rise.
Security sources, including the Nigerian Army, suspect the attack was carried out by armed bandits or terrorist elements operating within the region. No group has claimed responsibility for the bombing as of the time of filing this report.
Military personnel from the Kaiama base were swiftly deployed to the scene following the explosion. During their operation, they reportedly discovered and safely defused a second IED planted nearby, potentially preventing further casualties.
The latest attack has reignited trauma in Woro Village and surrounding communities, coming just weeks after a devastating assault on February 3, 2026, when armed militants reportedly killed more than 160 residents in nearby Woro and Nuku villages and abducted several others.
Residents say the renewed violence has deepened anxiety across the Kwara-Niger border corridor, an area already struggling with persistent insecurity.
Victims of the blast were evacuated to the General Hospital in New Bussa, where emergency responders are battling to save the injured.
Security experts warn that the use of IEDs on civilian routes signals a dangerous escalation in tactics by criminal groups. Similar incidents have recently been reported in neighbouring Niger State, including the destruction of a bridge along Luma Road in Borgu Local Government Area.
Kwara State Police authorities, alongside military operatives, have launched a full-scale investigation into the incident. Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movements or objects.
Community leaders are now calling for urgent and intensified security measures along the Kaiama–New Bussa road, a critical transport route linking several communities and supporting local commerce.
As of press time, officials say more details, including confirmed casualty figures and findings from the ongoing investigation, will be released in due course.
