Otaka Patrick Kalu, 48, a trader and David Ikechukwu, 32, an apprentice, have been apprehended with 132 or 2.7kilograms wraps of cocaine by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.
The suspects were caught at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano State on their way back from Kenya after testing positive for drug ingestion during inward screening of passengers on an Ethiopian Airline flight.
A statement issued by Ofoyeju Mitchell, NDLEA’s head, public affairs said Kalu injected 72 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.450kg, while Ikechukwu was found with 60 wraps, representing 1.250kg of the substance.
The suspects both confessed to committing the crime, adding that they were lured into trafficking in the hard drug by a $10,000 financial offer by their sponsor.
“The suspects were nabbed on their way from Kenya. Interim investigation revealed that they were recruited by one source and were promised the sum of 5,000 dollars each,” Ambrose Umoru NDLEA commander at the airport said.
