Rolene Strauss, 22, has won the Miss World 2014 beauty pageant in London on Sunday.
This year’s pageant was the 64th but it was nearly marred by tragedy after a Honduran beauty queen was found shot dead in a suspected crime of passion, days before she was due to take part in the competition.
Strauss, the daughter of a doctor and a nurse, is a year four medical student who had put her studies on hold. She had said becoming Miss South Africa and later Miss World and studying medicine were her childhood dreams.
While giving her acceptance speech, Strauss said, “Many people change their visions of what they want to become as they grow older. Mine never changed. I’ve always known that I would study medicine, just like my father. I was known as ‘Little Dr. Strauss’ in town, as I followed my dad everywhere he went.”
Hungary’s Edina Kulcsár came second and Elizabeth Safrit, representing the United States, came third.
