PDP Demands Probe Into Fayemi’s Tenure

The Ekiti State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has demanded a probe into the administration of Kayode Fayemi, the immediate past governor of the state.

In a recent statement, Wole Oluwawole, the party’s Publicity Secretary called on Fayose to investigate the former governor and his team of appointees to know exactly why they placed the state’s debt profile on a high level.

Fayemi had through Olayinka Oyebode, his Chief Press Secretary said the N36 billion debt the state is owing was an accumulation of inherited debt from previous administrations and funds spent on infrastructures embarked upon by his administration.

“In fact, Fayemi only came to repeat history as far as plunging the state into debts is concerned. He went further than his forebearer in APC by mortgaging the future of the state because of projects that have no economic values. Whereas, in the history of the state, PDP-led governments have always left the state in healthy financial condition,” the statement read in part.

Oluwawole recalled that similar incident had happened in 2003 when Otunba Niyi Adebayo former governor and Fayemi’s political ally left the state with “about N5bn loan from the capital market and left workers in the state with backlog of salary arrears running to 16 months in some cases,” he said.

“We laughed when he came up with his feeble defence that he only left over N36bn debts. He deliberately failed to mention commitments as far as workers’ salaries are concerned, he even lied that he only owed September salary, when did he pay that of August and July deductions that they squandered?”

This is one of the war of the words that has trailed events surrounding the aftermath of the July 21 governorship election in the state which saw the then ruling All Progressives Congress, APC defeated by the PDP.
