Nigeria’s aviation industry is facing an imminent crisis as domestic airlines warn they may suspend all flight operations nationwide starting Thursday, April 30, 2026, over the spiraling cost of aviation fuel.

The warning, issued by the Airline Operators of Nigeria, signals a potential travel disruption that could ground flights across major cities and leave thousands of passengers stranded. The development comes barely a week after a similar shutdown threat scheduled for April 20 was temporarily averted following government intervention.

At the center of the crisis is the dramatic surge in the price of Jet A1 fuel, which has risen by more than 300% in recent months. Industry sources say the price has jumped from around ₦900 per litre in late February to as high as ₦3,300 per litre in some parts of the country. Airline operators have described the increase as unsustainable, arguing that the current pricing structure does not reflect global fuel trends.

Fuel costs account for over 40% of airline operating expenses in Nigeria, placing immense pressure on carriers already battling high maintenance costs, foreign exchange constraints, and limited pricing flexibility due to passenger sensitivity. Operators warn that continuing operations under current conditions could push several airlines toward financial collapse.

If the planned shutdown goes ahead, domestic flights across key hubs including Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano will be affected, disrupting business travel, medical trips, and cargo logistics. Analysts caution that the ripple effects could extend beyond aviation, impacting employment, banking exposure to airline loans, and overall economic activity.

The Federal Government has already stepped in to prevent a complete shutdown. The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, previously appealed to airlines to suspend strike action and engage in dialogue. President Bola Tinubu is also reported to have approved partial debt relief measures while directing continued negotiations between airlines and fuel suppliers.

Despite these interventions, operators insist that the fundamental issue of high fuel costs remains unresolved, prompting the renewed threat of a nationwide shutdown. Industry stakeholders are now calling for urgent measures, including government intervention to stabilize Jet A1 prices, reduction of aviation-related charges, and increased reliance on domestic refining capacity such as the Dangote Refinery to reduce dependence on imports.

At least one airline has already grounded its fleet since mid-March due to the worsening situation, underscoring the severity of the crisis. Passengers have been advised to monitor flight updates closely and consider flexible travel arrangements as uncertainty builds ahead of the Thursday deadline.

The looming shutdown highlights deeper structural challenges within Nigeria’s aviation sector, where rising operational costs and economic pressures continue to threaten sustainability. With high-level talks ongoing, attention is now focused on whether a last-minute agreement can be reached to avert what could become one of the most disruptive aviation crises in recent years.
