Explosion Rocks Escravos–Lagos Pipeline: NNPC Confirms Incident, Launches Emergency Response in Delta State
While the exact cause of the explosion remains unknown, the national oil company said a thorough investigation has been initiated to determine what triggered the incident.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has confirmed an explosion on the Escravos–Lagos Pipeline following a reported breach near several communities in Delta State. The incident occurred at about 5:50 p.m. on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, affecting areas around Tebijor, Okpele, and Ikpopo in Gbaramatu Kingdom.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by Andy Odeh, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd., initial assessments showed a sudden pressure drop on a pipeline operated by the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC), suggesting a possible loss of containment.
While the exact cause of the explosion remains unknown, the national oil company said a thorough investigation has been initiated to determine what triggered the incident. “Our priority at this time is the safety of nearby communities and the protection of the environment,” the statement read.
NNPC said emergency response teams have been fully mobilised and are working in collaboration with relevant authorities, security agencies, and community leaders to contain the situation and minimise impact.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest safety and environmental standards, assuring the public that further updates will be provided as more verified information becomes available.
The explosion adds to the growing concerns over pipeline safety and vandalism in oil-producing regions, where such incidents often threaten lives, disrupt gas supply, and endanger the ecosystem.
