A major online controversy erupted this week after reports circulated that Spotify had removed around 309 million streams from Burna Boy’s catalog. Viral claims suggesting the Afrobeats superstar personally “farmed” these streams through bots or click farms are unsubstantiated and appear to be fueled by fan speculation.

The platform-wide cleanup, conducted by Spotify between February 11–13, 2026, targeted artificial and fraudulent streams across many global artists. Burna Boy’s catalog was significantly impacted, primarily on two tracks:

  • “Enjoy Yourself” (Remix): ~182.2 million streams removed
  • “Finders Keepers” (Remix): ~127.1 million streams removed

This caused Burna Boy’s total Spotify streams to drop from approximately 9.7 billion to 9.5 billion in just a few days.

Other Afrobeats artists were also affected, though to a lesser extent. Davido reportedly lost 18–23 million streams, while Wizkid’s numbers remained largely unaffected, sparking memes like “Wiz clean, others caught.”

Despite the online speculation, there is no verified evidence that Burna Boy or his management engaged in stream farming:

  • Spotify has not confirmed any artist-specific wrongdoing.
  • Burna Boy’s labels (Spaceship, Bad Habit, Atlantic Records) and management have made no statements admitting manipulation.
  • Independent analytics platforms such as Chartmetric and Soundcharts have not detected any bot activity linked to Burna Boy.

Industry experts note that such deductions are common during platform-wide purges, which aim to maintain fair metrics for all artists. In some cases, legitimate streams may be removed inadvertently or coordinated playlist activity can trigger reductions. Burna Boy’s historical growth remains largely organic, supported by playlist placements on Spotify’s RapCaviar, Today’s Top Hits, and African Heat.

Many “farming” claims were amplified by fan rivalry, particularly between supporters of Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido. Rival fans often exaggerate deductions to claim, “organic superiority.” Analysts caution against taking viral social media posts at face value during heated chart competitions.

Verdict:

  • Streams deducted: TRUE (~300M removed in February 2026)
  • Burna Boy personally farms streams: FALSE – no credible evidence exists.

Spotify regularly purges fraudulent activity across all genres and artists. Until official statements or forensic investigations are released, claims that Burna Boy deliberately manipulated his streams remain speculative and unverified. Fans are advised to follow official sources such as Spotify for Artists, reputable tracking platforms, or verified label announcements before sharing viral claims.
