The United Nations High Commission for Refugees has declared its readiness to work with the Turkish government to provide aids for thousands of Syrians fleeing the troubled Northeast region of the country.
This was disclosed today in a press release issued by António Guterres, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
Guterres commended the Turkish government for already providing aids for about 70, 000 refugees already in the country. Many of the refugees fled to Turkey within the last one day.
“I commend Turkey’s welcoming response to offer refuge and aid to this population so suddenly and violently driven from their homes in fear for their
lives.”
“This massive influx shows how important it is to offer and preserve asylum space for Syrians as well as the need to
mobilize international support to the neighboring countries so generously hosting them,” the statement said.
The latest attacks by ISIS on the Northeastern region and its advance in the Syrian city of Kobani has left 200, 000 people homeless.
As part of efforts to meet the increasing demand by asylum seekers mainly from Syria, the Turkish Government is constructing two camps with the support of UNHCR.
