Rivers State is set to begin its long-awaited transition from emergency rule back to democratic governance, in a move that has sparked both relief and anticipation among residents.

The announcement was made in a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibibia Lucky Worika, who revealed that an inter-denominational thanksgiving service will be held on Sunday, September 14, at the Ecumenical Centre, Abonima Wharf Road, Port Harcourt. The service, scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m., will formally mark the beginning of activities leading to the restoration of democracy in the state. Guests are expected to be seated by 9:30 a.m.

Those invited include permanent secretaries, local government chairmen, traditional rulers, security and paramilitary chiefs, captains of industry, and other stakeholders. Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retired), who has served as the Administrator during the emergency rule, will attend as the Special Guest of Honour.

The state has been under emergency rule since March, following a deep political crisis that led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State House of Assembly. The thanksgiving service is not only a formal government activity but also a symbolic moment for many citizens who see it as a step toward restoring political stability and civilian leadership.

Across Port Harcourt, residents have reacted with a mix of optimism and caution. For some, the event represents a fresh start and a chance to reclaim democratic governance. Others, however, remain wary, stressing that true relief will only come when elected officials return fully to office and governance resumes without federal intervention.

As Rivers State gathers for Sunday’s thanksgiving, the spotlight is firmly on the path ahead — a path that promises hope, renewal, and the long-awaited return of democracy to one of Nigeria’s most politically charged states.
