The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), through its corporate social responsibility arm, NNPC Foundation Limited/Gte, has been named the Most Responsible Organisation in Africa at the 19th SERAS Africa Sustainability Awards held in Lagos.
At the prestigious ceremony themed “Sustainability 2.0: Innovating for Impact and Inclusive Growth – Full Disclosure,” the NNPC Foundation emerged as one of the biggest winners of the night, clinching five top sustainability awards.

Africa Sustainability Professional of the Year – won by Mrs. Emmanuella Arukwe, Managing Director of NNPC Foundation.
Delivering an acceptance speech on behalf of the NNPC Board and Senior Management, Executive Vice President, Business Services, Mrs. Sophia Mbakwe, described the win as “both a validation and a call to deeper national service.”
She stressed that the Foundation’s interventions align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agenda for inclusiveness, shared prosperity, and sustainable development. “These awards reflect the hopes and lived experiences of over 200 million Nigerians. Their voices and expectations shape our work, as they see the impact—and they want us to do even more,” she said.
The Managing Director of the Foundation, Mrs. Emmanuella Arukwe, expressed pride in the organisation’s leadership role in driving sustainability across the continent.
“This top recognition affirms our position as a sustainability leader driving meaningful impact and lasting community development across Nigeria and beyond. This win belongs to NNPC Limited. This win belongs to impact. This win belongs to Africa,” she declared.
Arukwe highlighted several flagship achievements recorded in the year, including:
Restoration of sight to over 6,000 Nigerians through free cataract surgeries.
Rehabilitation of three wards (100-bed capacity) at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos.
Cancer awareness and screening programs with over 3,441 Nigerians screened in 2024.
Donation of essential medical equipment, including MRI machines, to hospitals nationwide.
Distribution of 40,000 STEM textbooks to public schools across Nigeria.
Financial literacy training for 1,075,981 NYSC members, with startup packs provided to 5,000 young entrepreneurs.
Training of 15,085 vulnerable farmers in climate-smart agriculture and provision of verified seedlings.
Distribution of over 30 truckloads of food, water, and medical supplies to flood victims in Borno State.
Large-scale tree-planting campaigns and establishment of climate clubs in Katsina State.
Donation of over 45 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to aid Nigeria’s transition to cleaner energy.
Arukwe emphasized that all initiatives are carefully monitored to ensure long-term impact.
SERAS Africa Founder, Mr. Ken Egbas, applauded the NNPC Foundation for its exceptional work in sustainability and community development. He noted that SERAS, established in 2007, is the second-oldest sustainability award platform globally—after the Reuters Business Award—and has become the gold standard for CSR performance on the continent.
The 2025 edition recorded 325 entries from 31 African countries, making it the largest and most competitive in the award’s 19-year history.
