Nigeria has recorded a major milestone in its drive to modernise and expand the gas industry, as the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), in partnership with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Nigeria, officially presented the Gas Trading Licence, Clearing House, and Settlement Authorisation to JEX Markets Ltd.

The historic presentation, held in Abuja, positions Nigeria as the first country in Africa to establish a regulated gas trading framework—ushering in a new era of transparency, efficiency, and market-driven growth in the nation’s gas sector.

The licence granted to JEX Markets Ltd signifies the formal launch of structured gas trading operations, enabling standardised transactions, improved liquidity, and the development of a credible marketplace for gas commodities. With Clearing House and Settlement Authorisation also issued, the system will support secure trading, verification, and payment processes in line with global best practices.

According to officials present at the ceremony, the collaboration between NMDPRA and SEC marks a major step towards creating an enabling environment for investment, price competitiveness, and long-term stability in the midstream and downstream gas value chain.

Industry experts have hailed the development as a game-changer for Nigeria’s energy transition ambitions, noting that a regulated gas trading market will help deepen domestic utilisation, drive industrial growth, and boost export potential.

The issuance of the licence to JEX Markets Ltd is expected to catalyse innovation, attract capital, and open new pathways for Nigeria to fully maximise its vast natural gas resources in line with the Federal Government’s economic agenda.
