Residents of Kogi State have been left stunned and disconnected as MTN Nigeria’s network has been completely down for nearly a week with no clear explanation or official communication from the telecom giant.

The unexpected blackout has forced thousands of residents and business owners to urgently migrate to rival networks like Airtel and Glo, just to stay online. From small businesses to students and remote workers, the impact has been described as “crippling,” as the region’s digital economy slows to a crawl.

“What exactly happened to MTN in Kogi? No signal. No update. No accountability,” a frustrated user posted on social media — a sentiment echoed by many others who’ve flooded X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook with complaints and confusion.

So far, MTN has not issued any official statement, leaving residents in the dark about whether this is a technical fault, sabotage, or something deeper. The silence is fueling speculation and criticism, as many call for answers and compensation.

Kogi-based entrepreneurs say the outage is hurting their earnings, especially those reliant on POS services, mobile banking, and internet-based customer service. “It’s not just a network issue, it’s an economic shutdown for us,” one café owner said.

As the outage stretches into its seventh day, many are wondering: Is this a temporary glitch, or a signal of something bigger beneath the surface?

One thing is clear — MTN may have just handed its Kogi market share to its competitors on a gold platter.
