Nepal is facing a devastating humanitarian crisis after a glacier-related collapse unleashed a powerful surge of water, mud, rocks and debris across the Himalayan border region, killing at least 469 people in Nepal and leaving more than 1,400 people missing across Nepal and Tibet, according to the latest reports from authorities.
The disaster struck on Wednesday, August 26, sending a huge debris flow into river systems including the Lhende, Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers and devastating communities along the waterways.
The force of the flooding destroyed homes, roads and bridges, damaged hydropower infrastructure and left thousands of people cut off from rescue teams.
The Trishuli River reportedly rose by as much as nine metres within about 30 minutes, turning normally flowing waterways into powerful channels carrying mud, boulders and debris downstream.
Some of the worst destruction has been reported in Nepal’s Rasuwa district near the Chinese border, while downstream districts including Nuwakot and others have also suffered heavy losses.
The disaster has also affected Tibet, where Chinese authorities have reported additional deaths and hundreds of people missing.
What initially raised questions about whether an earthquake had triggered the disaster has since been clarified. Scientific assessments indicate that the seismic activity associated with the event was a consequence of the massive glacier and debris collapse rather than the cause of the flooding.
Satellite imagery and expert analysis indicate that a large collapse involving bedrock, glacier material and debris destabilised the mountain environment before sending enormous quantities of material into the river valley.
The resulting flood swept through settlements with extraordinary force.
