Worse nightmares await road users as the Federal Government rejects further intervention by state governments in the repair of failed Federal roads across the country.
For the governor of Edo State, it was a classical case of “the rich also cry” as he got caught in the death trap that is the Benin – Ekpoma – Auchi highway recently en route the university town of Ekpoma for a social event. Perhaps if he had been properly briefed about how really bad and impassable the road was, he would have opted to make the trip by helicopter. But as fate would have it so that he would experience the agony and trauma the less-privileged go through as they daily embark on what could pass for a suicidal trip in the name of travelling through the road, he ended up in the failed portion of the road. And then, like other hapless and helpless commuters on the road, especially commercial motorists who daily go through the nightmare, Obaseki lamented the utter neglect of the road by the federal government. He said, “this is a major road; it’s the economic lifeline of Edo State. This is the road that takes you from Benin through the longest part of the state to Edo North. We are stuck here; we cannot get from Benin to Ekpoma because the road has failed.
