Gunmen Attack NDC Meeting in Enugu, Eight Reportedly Injured as 2027 Political Tension Rises

Gunmen reportedly attacked a voter sensitisation and grassroots mobilisation meeting of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Obuoffia Ward, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, leaving several party members injured and raising fresh concerns over political violence ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The incident occurred at about 3:40 p.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2026, during a gathering organised by the opposition party.

Initial reports indicated that one person had been shot during the attack. However, the NDC’s Enugu chapter subsequently said eight of its members sustained gunshot injuries.

Those named by the party were Onovo Donald Ekene, Ngene Godwin Madueke, Ogbodo Gloria, Onovo Victor, Maduabuchi Ugwu, Nnaemeka Nelson, Chinonso Nwagbara and Obinna Daniel Owo.

The party also said canopies, chairs and other political materials were destroyed during the incident.

Videos reportedly circulating on social media appeared to show the meeting before the attack and the confusion that followed as attendees fled the scene.

Hon. Sampson Ukwu, media aide to NDC governorship aspirant Sir Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa, condemned the incident, describing it as an alleged act of political thuggery intended to intimidate opposition members.

The NDC also linked the Obuoffia incident to earlier disruptions of political gatherings in Akpugo and Obe wards, both in Nkanu West Local Government Area.

The party called on the Enugu State Police Command, the Department of State Services and other security agencies to investigate the attack, identify those responsible and bring them to justice.

“The lives of our members matter,” the party said while urging authorities to take the security of political gatherings seriously.

The incident comes amid increasing political activity and heightened tensions in Enugu as political parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state has also raised concerns over alleged attacks on its members and political meetings, warning that such incidents could undermine peaceful political participation.

However, claims that the attacks form part of a broad, coordinated campaign exclusively targeting opposition parties have not been independently established. While political parties have made allegations of violence and intimidation, there was no widely reported confirmation from security agencies that the incidents were part of a single organised operation.

As of the immediate aftermath of the Obuoffia attack, there was also no widely reported official confirmation identifying the perpetrators or announcing arrests.

The latest incident has nevertheless renewed calls for security agencies to protect political gatherings and ensure that Nigerians can participate in political activities without fear of violence or intimidation.

With the 2027 elections approaching, political stakeholders and civil society groups are expected to intensify calls for restraint, accountability and peaceful participation across Enugu State.
