Foundation Targets 1000 Residents for Free Medicare in Edo

At least 1,000 persons in Edo State are to benefit from free healthcare services being provided by the Matthew Okpebholo Foundation under its medical outreach programmes. So far, about 500 persons have been attended to.

This was disclosed Thursday at a two-day health Initiative for rural dwellers in UromI, Esan North East local goverment area of the state by the team leader, Dr. Osadolor Asemota who explained that the health programme was to promote the well-being of indigent persons at the grassroots.

Asemota said the outreaches targeted indigent people in rural communities on key areas such as general consultation, surgical referrals, general dental and paediatric care, as well as distribution of free drugs.

He listed other areas of intervention to include screening for common ailments among the elderly and children; diabetes, HIV, typhoid fever and hypertension, among others.

According to Asemota, “During the exercise, medical volunteers will carry out diagnosis; treatment, medical procedures. Drugs, eye glasses, and other medical consumables are also given to patients free of charge.

“So far, we have attended to 500 persons and our target is 1,000 persons through our free health medical outreach. The foundation will be donating 100 free eye glasses”.

The team leader said the Foundation also focused on sensitising the people towards handling threats posed by deadly viral diseases, and would complement government efforts in preventing diseases.

Asemota urged communities to imbibe personal hygiene and environmental cleanliness as preventive measures against an outbreak.

“Health is wealth. They (people) should take their health seriously. When they hear anything, especially free medical care, they should come out en-mass and use the opportunity to test themselves,’’ Asemota said.

Some of the beneficiaries were full of gratitude to the foundation for the gesture and encouraged other people in the community to come out for the free medical service.

Adejoke Oluwole, one of the beneficiaries, said “this a great initiative and we appreciate Mathew Okpebholo Foundation for the outreach”

The Mathew Okpebholo Foundation has been engaged in the philanthropic gesture in the past 25 years.
