Former Super Eagles striker and 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner Emmanuel Emenike has accused individuals identifying themselves as police officers and officials of the Imo State waste management agency of invading his hospital in Owerri, allegedly harassing patients and staff and taking away two employees.
Emenike made the allegations in a statement and video shared on social media on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, describing the reported incident at Emenike Hospital as distressing and calling on the authorities to investigate.
According to the former Nigerian international, the individuals entered the medical facility, disrupted activities and took away the hospital administrator and cashier. He further alleged that the two employees were brutalised after being taken to Oji Police Station.
Emenike also claimed that a similar incident involving officers from Owerri Urban Division and Oji Police Station had occurred on September 25, 2026.
The former footballer said he established the hospital to give back to his home state after a successful career in European football and with the Nigerian national team.
“After representing my dear country on the international stage, playing in Europe and celebrating the trophy of winning the Africa Cup of Nations, I chose to bring my experience and success home to Imo State. I invested in my community and built a hospital — a place where people could seek care, find comfort and hold on to hope,” Emenike said.
He expressed concern that the reported incident had disrupted a facility established to provide healthcare services to residents.
“That is why the reports of what happened today, 21st of October, 2026, at Emenike Hospital are so painful. A place built to care for people should never become a place where patients are afraid and staff are left feeling unsafe,” he added.
Emenike called on the Imo State Government, the Nigeria Police Force and relevant oversight bodies to conduct an urgent and impartial investigation into the allegations.
He also demanded the immediate release of the hospital administrator and cashier, whom he claimed had been taken into custody and mistreated.
The allegations raise questions about the circumstances surrounding the reported incident, including the purpose of the officials’ visit, the basis for taking the employees away and whether any formal charges were filed.
The development comes days after Emenike publicly criticised some state governors over alleged corruption, a lack of development plans and the management of public funds. However, no evidence has been provided in the information available to establish a connection between those comments and the reported hospital incident.
As of the time of this report, neither the Imo State Police Command nor the state government had issued a detailed public response to the specific allegations, according to the information supplied.
The allegations have not been independently established, and the identities and official roles of all those involved remain unclear.
An official response from the police and the state government would help clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
