Dino Melaye, a former senator representing Kogi West in the Senate has lost another attempt to take back the seat. He lost the contest for the ticket of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP to Tajudeen Yusuf, a member of the House of Representatives on Monday. There was a tie after the initial conduct of primaries, but Melaye lost at the second ballot when he scored 99 votes against Yusuf’s 163 votes. Both politicians had earlier scored 88 votes each before the run off. Though Melaye conceded defeat and congratulated Yusuf , he claimed that he lost because of a “gang up”. He, however, did not indicate who was behind the gang up and for what reason it was done, except that he alluded to his support for Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President and a front runner for the presidential ticket of the party. He said he remained resolute on his support for the former president. Melaye was defeated during the 2019 general election by Senator Smart Adeyemi who then ran on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC. Had he won the ticket he would have had the opportunity of running at the forthcoming general election in 2023 , and once again test his popularity at the polls to determine if he would be able to reclaim his seat at the green house.
