The Lagos State Police Command has stopped an unapproved Egungun Festival allegedly planned by a group identified as the Oje Parapo of Oregun, arresting twelve suspects linked to posters and social media publications that threatened public movement and fundamental rights across the state.

According to a statement issued Wednesday November 26, 2025, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, a superintendent of police, SP, the suspects were apprehended after circulating handbills and online messages warning residents and restricting public freedom during the purported festival.

The police described the publication as an attempt to infringe on the rights of Lagosians and instigate fear within the community.

Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, immediately ordered the suspension of the festival scheduled for November 27 and 28, 2025, following intelligence reports that the event could lead to a breakdown of law and order. He emphasized that no group has the authority to impose unlawful restrictions on residents or disrupt public peace.

The statement noted that the police had already assessed the tension created by the publications, adding that the event “must not hold” due to its potential to destabilize the state. The Command reiterated that it will not tolerate any activity capable of threatening peace, safety, or public order.

A similar incident occurred on November 23, 2025, in Mafoluku, Oshodi, where the Command, acting through the Makinde Police Division, intercepted another group allegedly planning to disrupt public order through unauthorised festival announcements. Twelve suspects were subsequently arrested and are undergoing investigation, with prosecution to follow.

CP Jimoh reaffirmed that the Oje Parapo of Oregun must desist from holding the Egungun Festival, stressing that security for the event can no longer be guaranteed. He warned that the full weight of the law would fall on any individual or group attempting to undermine the peace and stability of Lagos State.

Residents were urged to go about their duties without fear and report any suspicious activities to the police via the Lagos State emergency numbers: 08063299264, 09053872208, 07061019374, and 08065154338.
