The visit of President Goodluck Jonathan to Lagos on Friday ahead of tomorrow’s governorship and state House of Assembly elections in Nigeria has generated accusations and counter-accusations between the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC in the state and the major opposition, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
The APC had accused the PDP of planning to rig the elections using its federal influence.
Lai Mohammed, APC National Publicity Secretary who made the allegation on Friday said the visit of the outgoing President to the state is a testimony that the party was planning to rig the elections through the use of fake result sheets which he claimed were airlifted to Lagos earlier before the President’s arrival.
Mohammed said, “If today things are being said that should not have been said, it is the direct consequence of the PDP’s divisiveness.”
”The meeting in Lagos was aimed at devising a strategy to distribute the fake result sheets that were packed into the SUV, which will be free to move around (because of its plate number) despite the restriction on vehicular movement during the elections.
”It is sad that the same President, who conceded defeat in the presidential election and then followed up with a speech in which he said he would like his ‘legacy’ of free and fair elections to endure, is the one who is presiding over a desperate move to steal the people’s votes on Saturday,” Mohammed said.
But the PDP has described the allegation by the APC as “cheep blackmail,” while accusing it of not reciprocating the “good gesture” of President Jonathan who promised free, fair and credible election and has manifested it by conceding his own power of incumbency.
Speaking to TELL Taofic Gani, PDP Spokesman in Lagos said “He (Jonathan) had come to Lagos to thank Lagos PDP for supporting him and to let us know that he’s wishing us well.”
Gani argued that Muhammadu Buhari, President-elect was also in Lagos for 2-days on a rally show and visited several communities on behalf of Akinwumi Ambode, APC governorship candidate in the state but was not accused of plotting to influence the election.
“It is unfortunate that APC can be championing this type of thing. The APC is desperate not to relinquish power in Lagos, and they can do anything,” Gani said.
