Fresh controversy has erupted within the All Progressives Congress in Imo State after an unnamed aspirant from Ahiazu Mbaise publicly accused the party of rigging its State House of Assembly primary election process.

The visibly emotional aspirant, whose video has now gone viral across X and other social media platforms, alleged that despite spending more than ₦10 million on nomination and expression of interest forms, the party allegedly handed the ticket to another aspirant who never purchased any form.

In the emotional clip, the man lamented what he described as “criminality” within the primary process, claiming that six aspirants paid for forms and participated in the race, only for the ticket to allegedly be awarded to Doris Anyanwu.

According to him, the woman was never part of the original contestants who bought forms for the Ahiazu Mbaise constituency primary.

“This is criminality! I spent over ₦10 million. They skipped all six of us who bought forms and gave it to somebody who didn’t buy anything,” the aspirant cried out in the viral video while displaying his academic degree certificate.

He also alleged that beyond the official nomination and expression of interest fees, aspirants were subjected to multiple unofficial payments and “facilitation” demands throughout the process.

The aspirant vowed not to accept the outcome quietly and called on party leaders to intervene and investigate the matter.

The allegations have triggered widespread debate online, with many Nigerians pointing to the incident as another example of the high cost, lack of transparency, and alleged godfather influence often associated with Nigerian politics.

However, the Imo State chapter of the APC has denied the allegations.

In a statement issued by Prince Uwalaka Chimaroke, the party described the complainant as a “disgruntled aspirant” and insisted that the State House of Assembly primaries were conducted transparently using a direct primary system.

According to the party, all winners emerged through votes cast by accredited party members, dismissing claims of imposition or manipulation.

The incident has nonetheless reignited criticism about the financial burden of contesting elections in Nigeria, where party nomination forms for legislative positions often cost millions of naira.

Political observers say many aspirants also complain privately about additional expenses linked to lobbying, mobilization, and party negotiations, making the process inaccessible for ordinary Nigerians without financial backing or political godfathers.

The viral video has since generated thousands of reactions online, with users expressing a mix of sympathy, mockery, and frustration.

Some commenters accused the ruling party of hypocrisy, while others argued that the incident reflects broader problems affecting nearly all major political parties in Nigeria.

One social media user wrote:

«“Spent ₦10 million and still lost to someone who didn’t buy form. Nigerian politics will humble you.”»

Another reacted:

«“This is why many young Nigerians avoid politics. Money alone cannot save you without connections.”»

A third user mocked the situation, saying:

«“APC people now tasting the same ‘pain of rigging’ they talk about every election season.”»

Others called for urgent reforms to internal party democracy ahead of the 2027 elections, warning that unresolved grievances could weaken political parties from within.

As controversies continue to trail party primaries across the country, the Ahiazu Mbaise dispute is expected to add pressure on party leaders already battling accusations of imposition, favoritism, and lack of transparency.

Meanwhile, Nigerians continue to debate whether the incident is an isolated dispute or another sign of deeper structural problems within the nation’s political system.
