A senior officer of the Nigeria Police Force has triggered widespread outrage across the country after a viral video showed him threatening to shoot citizens who attempt to record police officers while on duty.

The officer, identified as Newton Isokpehi, made the controversial remarks in a video that surfaced online early Thursday, igniting heated debates about police accountability, abuse of power, and citizens’ constitutional rights.

In the now-viral clip, the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) appeared to issue a direct warning to members of the public who film officers during stop-and-search operations or other official duties.

“Any day I’m on duty as a Nigerian police officer, let anyone record me. That person will provide the officer who gave them the order to be filming us, because I will clear everybody down,” he declared.

The disturbing statement has drawn sharp condemnation from Nigerians on social media and civil rights groups, especially because it appears to openly defy a March 2026 ruling by the Federal High Court affirming the constitutional right of Nigerians to record police officers carrying out public duties.

Human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu reacted strongly to the video, describing the officer’s remarks as a serious danger to public safety and democratic freedoms.

According to Gwamnishu, the comments could place innocent civilians at risk during routine police encounters.

“It’s important Nigerians see this video. This is a clear threat because we don’t know where this police officer is operating, and someone could be harmed while recording during a stop-and-search operation,” he stated.

The activist also renewed calls for stricter psychological evaluation and drug testing for officers accused of misconduct.

“I’ve said it before, some of these officers need to be subjected to drug tests. However, I also want to advise Nigerians: we should always respect officers on duty and avoid verbal abuse,” he added.

The incident has intensified demands for disciplinary action against ASP Isokpehi, with many Nigerians calling for his immediate suspension, investigation, and mandatory psychiatric and drug evaluation.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police Force has not released any official statement regarding the viral video or the allegations surrounding the officer’s comments.

The viral clip has also reignited nationwide conversations about the relationship between police officers and civilians, especially in the aftermath of repeated allegations of harassment, brutality, and abuse during stop-and-search operations.

Observers warn that inflammatory statements from armed officers could further damage public confidence in the police and increase tensions during routine law enforcement encounters.

The story continues to generate widespread reactions online as Nigerians await a formal response from police authorities.
