Ibadan, Oyo State — The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has passed away, marking the end of one of the shortest reigns in the history of the ancient throne. The respected monarch died in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, just two days after celebrating his 90th birthday.

Oba Olakulehin ascended the throne on July 12, 2024, following his coronation by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, becoming the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland. His death comes after just one year on the throne, echoing a historical parallel—Oba Akintunde Bioku, who died in January 1948, also reigned for only a year and sixteen days.

The late Olubadan was known for his deep wisdom, humility, and dedication to the peace and development of Ibadanland during his brief reign. His passing has thrown the city of Ibadan into mourning, as residents express shock and grief over the sudden loss, especially so soon after celebrating his landmark birthday.

In line with the traditional succession structure of the Ibadan chieftaincy system, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, a former Governor of Oyo State, is now next in line and is expected to become the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.

The Palace is yet to issue an official statement, but a formal announcement is expected soon as preparations begin for traditional rites of passage.
