Security operatives comprising the police, army, and vigilante men on Wednesday engaged some dare-devil kidnappers in a gun duel along the notorious Benin- Auchi axis of Edo State, killing three of them. The shoot-out occurred at Okwo, in Ehor, before the university town of Ekpoma in Uhunmwode local government area of the state.
According to reports, the rampaging kidnappers had on Tuesday morning, reportedly laid siege to the ever busy highway, but were chased into the forest by security operatives who engaged them in exchange of fire.
Travellers plying the road were trapped for several hours as the security operatives engaged the hoodlums in gun battle. It was gathered that an unidentified young man who was driving a Lexus SUV was hit on his shoulder by a stray bullet. The audacious suspected kidnappers however returned to the highway Wednesday morning to waylay hapless travellers.
Again, a combined team of security operatives appeared on the scene to confront the hoodlums who succumbed to the superior fire power of the joint forces as three of them were gunned down, while others escaped into the forest with gunshot injuries.
Confirming the incident, the State Police Command spokesman, Kontongs Bello, superintendent of police, SP, said “It happened yesterday [Tuesday] at 0620hrs, at Okwo in Ehor area, but the combined team of the police and the military foiled the attempt; nobody was kidnapped, one person, a young man driving Lexus 350, was hit in his car in his shoulder.
“Meanwhile, today, (Wednesday) the hoodlums came out again, and three of them were gunned down by the combined team of the police, military, and vigilante. Edo must be safe”.
