Benin monarch, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, has again taken custody of another set of repatriated Benin artefacts, this time from the government of Netherlands which returned 119 looted Benin bronzes.
At a symbolic ceremony Wednesday night held at his palace to welcome the repatriated artefacts carted away during the infamous 1897 British invasion, Oba Ewuare revealed how an international art cartel had attempted to re-loot the priceless artefacts but failed. He also recounted efforts he made to thwart the attempted re-looting.
Present at the momentous event were the Director General of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM), Mr. Olugbile Holloway; and the Director-General of Wereld Museum; Ms. Marieke van Bommel, who led a delegation from the Netherlands and Abuja to formally return the artefacts to their ancestral home.
The return, according to the Oba, was made possible through sustained advocacy by the Benin Royal Court and formal diplomatic requests from the Nigerian Government.
