Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Independent Peoples of Biafra, IPOB has been sentenced to life imprisonment. He was found guilty of all counts of terrorism to which he was charged after his arrest and repatriation to the country from Kenya. He had earlier been granted bail in Nigeria before he traveled outside the country. Kanu had offered to defend himself after he sacked his lawyers. Justice James Omotosho of the federal high court in Abuja said he considered the plea of the federal lawmaker representing Kanu’s constituency, who pleaded for the mercy of the court, adding that his long absence from his family be considered. Justice Omotosho said though his offences attracted death penalty, he considered the plea for mercy and the current international objection to death sentence. However, the judge, who condemned Kanu’s aggressive behavior in the court room all through the period of the trial, said that the convict be kept in safe custody where he would not have unfettered access to the communication devices, except through official permission. Kanu had to be walked out of the court earlier on Thursday after he challenged the court on the trial on charges he said were not within the jurisdiction of the court. The judgement was thus given in his absence, due to what the court considered his unruly behavior. The judge, therefore, said that Kanu should be kept in facilities outside that at kuje, Abuja.
