Many Feared Dead in Ukraine Mine Blast

A suspected gas blast at a coal mine in a rebel-held region of east Ukraine has killed at least 30 people and left some 40 missing, officials said on Wednesday.

However, several rebel officials said that they could not confirm the death toll at the Zasyadko mine in Donetsk. At the time of the blast, 230 people were in the shaft.

Mikhail Volynets, union spokesman said, “The fate of 47 miners is unknown, they could be dead but five miners with grave burns have been evacuated from the affected area.”

Zasyadko suffered Ukraine’s worst mining disaster in November 2007, when 101 people were killed.
