A violent incident at Filmhouse Cinemas IMAX in Lekki, Lagos, on Friday night left two people dead after a machete- and knife-wielding man allegedly attacked security personnel before being mobbed by a crowd.
The incident, which occurred outside the popular cinema, reportedly caused panic among patrons, workers and passers-by as the confrontation escalated.
According to eyewitness accounts, the suspect, described as a destitute man who was allegedly under the influence of drugs, approached the cinema entrance and attempted to gain access. Security guards reportedly stopped him from entering, triggering a violent confrontation.
The man allegedly pulled out a machete and knife and attacked the guards, fatally stabbing one of them and injuring another.
As the situation intensified, people at the scene reportedly intervened and attacked the suspect. He sustained serious injuries during the confrontation and subsequently died.
Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, SP Adebisi Abimbola, confirmed the deaths on Saturday, saying two people had been confirmed dead in connection with the incident.
She said the identities of the deceased and other details surrounding the incident were still being investigated.
As part of the investigation, police have reportedly taken the cinema’s Chief Security Officer into custody to assist with inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Investigators are also reviewing CCTV footage from the cinema premises to reconstruct the sequence of events and determine exactly how the confrontation unfolded and whether other individuals were involved.
The incident has renewed concerns about security at major entertainment venues in Lagos, particularly establishments that attract large numbers of people.
Filmhouse Cinemas IMAX in Lekki is located in one of Lagos’ busiest entertainment districts, where cinemas, restaurants, shopping centres and other recreational facilities draw large crowds, especially at weekends.
The police have yet to disclose the identity of the attacker or provide further details about the injured security guard’s condition.
Authorities are expected to release additional information as the investigation progresses.
