Lagos Thief Demands ₦50,000 Ransom for Stolen Phone — Then Agrees to Collect “Opueh” from Broke Victim
The bizarre Lagos incident has gone viral after a thief demanded ₦50,000 ransom for a stolen phone — then agreed to accept “opueh” from the broke victim instead, sparking outrage and amusement across social media.
A shocking and bizarre story from Lagos has gone viral after a thief who stole a sleeping man’s phone allegedly demanded a ₦50,000 ransom — and then agreed to accept “opueh” (slang for sex) instead of cash.
According to an X (Twitter) post by user @O.L.Ó.Y.È, the incident occurred in Ikotun, Lagos. The victim, after waking up to find his phone missing, kept calling his number until the thief picked up. When begged to return the device, the thief boldly demanded ₦50,000.
Unable to pay, the victim jokingly asked if the thief would accept “opueh.” To everyone’s disbelief, the thief agreed — and even showed up to collect his “payment.” Reports say he was caught and handed over to local authorities.
The viral post has drawn thousands of reactions online, with many users expressing shock, outrage, and humor at the absurdity of the situation. Some called it a new level of moral decay, while others used it to highlight Nigeria’s growing poverty and crime rate.
Official data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) shows that over 25 million phones were stolen across Nigeria between May 2023 and April 2024, averaging nearly 3,000 thefts per hour. Analysts say worsening economic hardship has fueled desperation and petty crimes like phone snatching and ransom extortion.
As one user put it, “Only in Lagos will a thief negotiate payment options — even the immoral kind.”
