The Kwara State Government has reaffirmed its strong commitment to ensuring sustainable access to clean and potable water for residents across the state, with the completion and commissioning of key waterworks projects in Zambufu and Otte/Budo-Egba.
Speaking at the Q3 Inter-Ministerial Press Briefing organized by the Ministry of Communications on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Water Resources, Hon. Usman Yunusa Lade, highlighted the state’s major strides in water infrastructure and sanitation development under the administration of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
Hon. Lade announced the successful completion of the Lafiagi and Zambufu Waterworks, alongside the newly commissioned three power phases at Otte/Budo-Egba Waterworks, while confirming that rehabilitation work at Omu-Aran and Oyun Waterworks is in full swing and nearing completion.
According to him, the AbdulRazaq-led administration has shown exceptional commitment to improving citizens’ quality of life through water and sanitation programs, adding that Oke-Ero Local Government Area has officially been declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) by the National Council on Sanitation and Task Group (NSTG), Abuja — earning the state a commendation from the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation.
In a related development, the Commissioner disclosed that Governor AbdulRazaq has paid ₦700 million as counterpart funding for the Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria (SPIN) project — a move aimed at bolstering food production, water supply, and energy reliability across rural communities.
Hon. Lade added that the government is also hosting a strategic meeting of General Managers and representatives from North-Central States’ Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agencies, focused on eliminating open defecation across the region.
He further revealed that several solar-powered and hand pump borehole projects are ongoing across the three senatorial districts, while pipe repairs, articulation, and extension works are being executed within the Ilorin metropolis to improve water flow and distribution.
The Commissioner also noted that the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) has successfully drilled a solar-powered borehole at the Ministry of Livestock and completed the first phase of the renovation of the Kwara State Water Corporation (KWWC) headquarters along Zulu Gambari Road, GRA, Ilorin.
He concluded that the state government is exploring alternative power sources to operate waterworks more efficiently and ensure uninterrupted water supply to residents.
