In a solemn tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, the Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday, as part of the official seven-day national mourning period announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
The announcement was made on Monday, July 14, by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following President Tinubu’s approval. The Minister emphasized that the holiday is a mark of national respect for the former leader’s distinguished service and his enduring legacy in Nigeria’s democratic and developmental journey.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” the Minister stated. “This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”
Citizens have been urged to use the day to honour Buhari’s memory by promoting peace, patriotism, and national unity—core values the late President consistently championed throughout his public life.
As previously announced, national flags are being flown at half-mast for the entire mourning period, from Sunday, July 13, to Saturday, July 19, 2025.
The Federal Government extended its heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and the entire nation, praying for the peaceful repose of the late President’s soul.
This declaration has sparked a wave of tributes and reflections nationwide, as Nigerians remember the man who led them both as a military ruler and as a democratically elected President.
