The convoy of Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi was on Monday attacked in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital by suspected thugs believed to be working for Ayo Fayose, the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the upcoming gubernatorial election in Ekiti State.
A statement issued by Olayinka Oyebode, Chief Press Secretary to Ekiti State governor said the attack occurred around 6pm on Monday when the Governor and his supporters were returning to Ado-Ekiti from a campaign rally in Ekiti East Local Government Area of the state.
“The suspected thugs numbering about 100 suddenly emerged from Fayose’s Campaign Office, throwing stones and bottles at the Governor’s vehicle and vehicles belonging to members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who accompanied the Governor on the campaign tour,” the statement read.
Oyebode added that but for the Governor who restrained his security aides and party supporters from retaliating, there would have been some casualties in the attack that lasted a few minutes.
Some APC loyalists however sustained minor injuries in the melee, while some vehicles had their windscreens smashed by stones thrown by the rampaging thugs.
Monday’s incident came barely a week after the April 1 attack on some APC supporters by people believed to be working for the PDP candidate around the Adebayo area of the state capital.
