Tributes have continued to pour in for the late Godwin Osagie Abbe, a retired army General, and former Defence and Interior minister during the administration of former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. General Abbe was also a military governor of Akwa Ibom and Rivers States.
The latest tribute came from the Edo State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) which Abbe was a member.
In the tribute signed by Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, chairman of its caretaker committee, the PDP noted that the late Abbe “was not only a soldier but a statesman who embodied the spirit of patriotism”.
The tribute reads:
“In the annals of our nation’s history, few figures stand as tall as General Godwin Abbe. His unwavering commitment to service, leadership, and the ideals of integrity has left an indelible mark on Edo State and beyond.
“As we gather to mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life dedicated to the betterment of our society. General Abbe was not only a soldier but a statesman who embodied the spirit of patriotism.
“His courage on the battlefield was matched only by his resolve in the corridors of power, where he championed the rights of the marginalised and worked tirelessly for peace and unity among our people.
“His legacy of service is a beacon for all who aspire to lead with honour and humility. Throughout his distinguished career, General Abbe exhibited a profound sense of duty. He inspired countless individuals, particularly the youth, to pursue excellence and embrace the values of discipline, courage, and resilience. His mentorship and guidance will continue to resonate within our state and Nigeria at large for generations to come.
“As members of the Edo PDP, we reflect on the profound loss of a great leader and friend. His vision for a prosperous and safe Edo State remains a guiding light for us as we continue our work in his honour. We pledge to uphold the principles he cherished and to strive for the progress he envisioned.
“To General Abbe, we say thank you. Thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and your unwavering belief in a better future for all.
“You will be sorely missed, but your spirit will forever live on in our hearts and in the fabric of our party and state. Rest in peace, General Abbe”.
