Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the coordinating minister for the economy and minister of finance, has commended the courage of Nigerian medical professionals over their response to the feared Ebola virus disease in spite of the risk to their lives.
She said the commitment of the health workers was an actual embodiment of the Nigerian spirit of patriotism and sacrifice.
Okonjo-Iweala urged Nigerians to replicate the selflessness shown by these professionals whom she described as heroes, and reiterated such courage was important in all aspects of the society in order to achieve the dream of a much greater nation.
“I would like to commend the Nigerian health care professionals who have put their lives on the line to prevent the spread of Ebola in Nigeria,” she said.
The minister added that: “Their spirit and determination are embodied in the heroic self-sacrifice of two women, Stella Adadevoh and Obi Justina Ejelonu, who put the wellbeing of all Nigerians ahead of their own when they treated Nigeria’s first case of Ebola and worked to prevent its spread. My thoughts are with their families and loved ones as we mourn their passing and celebrate their courage. May they stand as an example to all Nigerians. My condolences also to the families of other victims of Ebola. May the Almighty comfort and grant them strength at this difficult time.” Adadevoh, who passed away on August 18, 2014, reportedly saved the country from potential epidemic of the Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, when she forcefully restricted Sawyer to his bed after he tried to remove the drip administered on him.
