In a bold move set to reshape Africa’s energy landscape, Nigeria’s Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced plans to construct a massive 1.6-million-barrel fuel storage facility in Walvis Bay, Namibia, as part of its continental expansion strategy.

The state-of-the-art storage tanks, expected to hold gasoline and diesel, will serve as a key supply hub for southern African nations including Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The development marks a major step in Dangote’s ambition to dominate refined fuel supply across Africa and beyond.

According to Reuters, construction will take place within Namibia’s Walvis Bay harbour, a strategic port that will enable the smooth distribution of petroleum products to landlocked countries in the region. This expansion follows the refinery’s successful ramp-up of exports since commencing operations in 2024.

Aliko Dangote’s $20 billion refinery, located in Lekki, Nigeria, is the largest in Africa with a refining capacity of 650,000 barrels per day. The refinery has already begun exporting to international markets, including Asia, and now aims to boost intra-African trade in line with the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).

Industry analysts hail the move as a game-changer for energy security in Africa, reducing the continent’s overreliance on fuel imports from Europe and stabilizing supply in fuel-stressed southern nations.

The Namibia expansion is not just about logistics; it’s about transforming Africa from a fuel-importing to a fuel-exporting continent. With the Walvis Bay storage hub, Dangote is positioning itself at the heart of Africa’s energy future.

As the refinery continues to scale, this landmark project may pave the way for further infrastructure investments across the continent, fueling economic growth and regional cooperation.
